System Restore is a recovery method widely used by Windows users. If something is wrong with the Windows operating system, you can use System Restore to restore the operating system to its last healthy state. But what if you can’t create a system restore point at all? This article resolves an issue where Windows cannot create a system restore point.
When creating a system restore point manually, I received the following error message:
The restore point could not be created for the following reason:
The specified object could not be found. (0x80042308)
Try again.
After receiving this error, I rebooted my computer several times, but the situation did not change. Also run a System File Checker scan, but nothing wrong was found. No third-party software is installed on the computer, much less antivirus software. So why is this error?
If you are also in the same situation and are experiencing this problem on Windows 10 or earlier, here are the steps to fix this problem:
Contents
Delete all restore points
- Press Winkey + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Enter sysdm.cpl and press ENTER.
- On the System Protection tab, select the available disks with protection enabled.
- Click Configure, click Disable System Protection or Disable System Protection (in Windows 10).
- Click Apply and then click Yes when you receive the following prompt:
- Are you sure you want to disable system protection on this drive?
- Existing restore points on the hard drive are deleted and new restore points are not created. You cannot use System Restore to undo unwanted system changes on all drives.
- Enable system protection for the system drive.
