Use the automatic repair built into Windows

In some cases, Windows Automatic Repair can fix some startup errors. To access the automatic recovery from the installation CD, follow these steps:

  • Boot from the Windows installation CD
  • Once you have selected the correct language, time, and keyboard input, click Next on the setup page.
  • Click on Repair your computer and select Troubleshoot.
  • Click on more options
  • Select Automatic Repair, then select your operating system.

Recover the operating system using the Recovery CD.

This method also recovers your operating system by inviting you to recover the recovery disc. You should be able to boot into Windows without resolving the problem again. Boot from the Recovery Drive and follow the instructions below.

  • Follow steps 1-3 of the previous method to go to recovery disk invitation.
  • At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then type them on your keyboard to execute them. The StartRep.exe utility fixes the boot environment values and should fix the BCD error. Note that if this fails, you may have to repeat the step several times.
  • If the previous Windows recovery step did not help, type bcdedit at the command line to see the values of Windows Boot Manager.
  • Notice the device values. If they are unknown, type the following commands, and then press the Enter key to execute them. Note that you may have to replace C: with the partition where your operating system is installed.

Rebuild BCD manually

Since boot failure is often caused by BCD corruption, recovery is often a good solution.

Here are the steps to recover BCD:

  • Boot from the Windows installation CD
  • After selecting the correct language, time, and keyboard input, click Repair your computer.
  • Select your Windows installation drive, usually C: \, then click Next.
  • Select Command Prompt when the System Recovery Options dialog box appears.
  • Write the following command and press Enter:
  • bootrec / rebuildbcd
  • When the program finds the Windows installation and asks if you want to add it to the startup list, press Y.
